PORT WELGEM

PORT

LEAVING PORT WELGEM
 AND
 SAYING OUR GOODBYES

Us young pirates were all invited to a special event at the Port assembly hall.  Mom and Dad were also attending along with our humans - Grams and Gramps.  It was a very moving moment when we came into the hall - everyone stood and gave us a rousing applause.  We were struck dumb.  Wow, we didn't expect the reception we received.  Captain Sam Bellamy hosted the proceedings. Nearly everyone in the Port was in attendance.  There was loads of food and merriment by all.

Captain Sam took the stage, "It gives me great pleasure to introduce and say our goodbyes to the young stalwart pirates at our little Port:  Sig, Avie, Ivan, Ellie and Griffin.  This week our friends will be venturing out into the world, armed with the knowledge all of us have given them over the past two months.  I speak for everyone here at Port Welgem in wishing that as they sail off, they know that the Port is their home and are always welcome back at the Port anytime, for any reason. We wish them God speed.  May they go with the wind filling their sails.  We want them to always remember that not only are they pirates first and foremost but are upholding a tradition that has been going on for decades."

When we got back to our bunks at the nursery, we vowed to keep in touch with each other.  While we were excited to be moving on, we were also sad to be leaving all our friends and humans behind.  Ivan will be the first to sail off.  A few days later Sig, Avie, Ellie and Griffin will be boarding their vessels and departing.  We each looked at our meagre possessions (pirates always travel light) to start and sort out what we will pack for our trip and new home.  We all snuggled with one another and drifted off to a blissful sleep...

We want to thank you for joining with the Yukon Pirates and participating in their adventures.  We hope they were able to give you a smile or two.  This has been a wonderful litter to work with.  We know they will leave the Port confident and happy.  They will always be part of the Welgem family, as to will be their owners.

So until next litter we say goodbye, as do the pirates.

Captain Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy

Captain Samuel Bellamy, later known as "Black Sam" Bellamy, was a Welsh pirate who operated in the early 18th century. He is best known as the wealthiest pirate in recorded history, worth over 400 million pounds in today's money.

Whydah Gally

Bellamy decided to take Whydah Gally as his new flagship.

She was then fitted with a total of 50 cannons on two decks by its new captain, and 150 members of Bellamy's crew were detailed to man the vessel.

Bellamy and his crew then sailed on to the Carolinas and headed north along the eastern coastline of the American colonies, aiming for the central coast of Maine, looting or capturing additional vessels on the way.  She was a ship and crew that were feared.

WALES

Bartholomew Roberts (17 May 1682 – 10 February 1722), born John Roberts, was a Welsh pirate and the most successful pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy (measured by vessels captured), taking over 400 prizes in his career.  Roberts raided ships off the Americas and the West African coast between 1719 and 1722.

WALES
Sir Henry Morgan was the most famous of all buccaneers, amassing a fortune by plundering Spain's Caribbean colonies during the late seventeenth century. Through his leadership, courage, ruthlessness, he ensured the survival of English interests in the Caribbean.  His name became legendary in the annals of piracy.

IRELAND
Grace O’Malley was born into a powerful clan that lorded over the coastlines of western Ireland. After taking the reins in the 1560s, she continued a family tradition of piracy by plundering English and Spanish shipping vessels and attacking rival chieftains. Her escapades were legendary—one tale claims she did battle at sea only a day after giving birth—but they also drew the ire of the authorities. She was forced to repel a siege against her stronghold at Rockfleet Castle in 1574

HAITI

Henri Caesar, also known as Black Caesar, (fl. 1791-1830) was a legendary 19th-century Haitian revolutionary and pirate. He was a participant in the Haitian Revolution under Dutty Boukman and Toussaint Louverture as well as active in piracy for nearly a 30-year period during the early 19th century.

Henri Caesar has been confused with a real pirate who was also known as Black Caesar and operated from the Florida Keys in the early 1700s until being captured and hanged in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1718.

READ

ENGLAND

ENGLAND
Mary Read (1685 – 28 April 1721), also known as Mark Read, was an English pirate. She and Anne Bonny are two of the most famed female pirates of all time, and among the few women known to have been convicted of piracy during the early 18th century, at the height of the "Golden Age of Piracy".
